There is a cabin tucked away on top of a hill in Central Texas. It peeks out through lost pines where birds call to each other as they busily take care of their daily chores, and where the breeze whispers its hello through the open windows. This is the place for peace and tranquility, secluded enough for Austin dwellers to get away from it all and retreat back to nature.

Best Little Cabin in Texas

The Best Little Cabin in Texas

My family and I were looking for a remote getaway last spring and found what looked like the perfect place to escape for the weekend. It’s the Best Little Cabin in Texas.

Given that it is wildflower season in Texas, and the weather was so beautiful, we were lucky to find a vacancy in March. The owners, Dianne and Terry James, were gracious hosts answering all of our questions over email. They also provided clear directions from Austin before our weekend visit.

Slightly off the beaten path, we easily found the cabin by using the humorous signs to guide our way. When we gazed upon the cabin, nested at the top of the hill, we instantly felt relaxation pour over our shoulders. The cabin is spacious and includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully outfitted kitchen, laundry, a comfortable living room, and a deck that stretches the length of the cabin. The deck overlooks Smithville in the distance.

The Best Little History in Texas

There is history here. It’s not called “The Best Little Cabin in Texas” for nothing.

The bed in the main bedroom once belonged to the madam of the original Chicken Ranch in La Grange. There is memorabilia all around telling the story of the famous Chicken Ranch. That adds a quirky, romantic touch. Although the original name was fitting, we preferred to call it Frog Cabin as the trinkets throughout the cabin pay humorous homage to the Houston Toad. A variety of touches within the cabin, and beyond, reflect Dianne and Terry’s eclectic tastes.

The cabin, while remote, is not rustic. It features all the modern conveniences including ceiling fans and air conditioning if you visit during summer. There is a refrigerator, stove, microwave and all the conveniences you would find at home.

While staying at the cabin, you can sit and read, play games, or hike the property at your leisure. I recommend searching for the donkeys on the property. As nighttime falls, a fire pit begs for old-fashioned s’mores. Or, you can sit and gaze at the sky and wonder at the abundant stars that feel so close it seems you can reach up and touch them.

With so many choices about things to do, I confess that sitting on the back stairs as the afternoon fades, with a glass of wine in hand, was my favorite moment at the cabin. We sat and watched the birds finish their chores for the day, and listened as they sang their song of choice. The wind in the trees and the songs of the birds were truly lovely, but my favorite sounds were my husband’s sighs as we relaxed at the Best Little Cabin in Texas.
