South Padre Island Golf Club Stay & Play Review
South Padre Island Golf Club has a very attractive Golf Stay & Play option at reasonable prices that can include range balls, a meal voucher, two bedroom fully equipped lodging, and a round of golf with a cart. Or you can choose from other lodging options one of which includes a view of the bay and a private boat slip out your back door. South Padre Island Golf Club is located in Laguna Vista, Texas which is about 30 minutes from the Rio Grande Valley International Airport in Harlingen and cheap flights are available from just about anywhere in the United States. The Rio Grande Valley is full of history, Mexico is 30 minutes away, and within 20 minutes you can be parasailing, riding horses on the beach, deep sea fishing, surfing, or sitting on the beach soaking up the rays at South Padre Island. We had a blast on South Padre Island (read our Winter Vacation on South Padre Island article) and really enjoyed playing and staying at South Padre Island Golf Club. It's really hard to get bored when you stay at South Padre Island Golf Club and you'll find something for all ages to do.
Golfing at South Padre Island Golf Club
We had played South Padre Island Golf Club's course over 10 years ago and remember that we loved it then and we couldn't wait to play it again - and we weren't disappointed. The front nine is fantastic - fun, unique, scenic, and challenging! And the back nine is also very good and a joy to play. You'll want to play this 18 again.
The front nine really gets interesting on the third hole - a 190 yard par 3 with a carry over a lake to the green that is protected by water along the right side as well as a large sand bunker. It's also a hard one to putt because if you look up you'll lose all your focus after taking in the view of Laguna Madre Bay and South Padre Island far off in the distance. If you bogeyed the hole and lost a ball in the water like I did, you may start thinking about fishing or parasailing or sitting in a lawn chair on the beach or sipping a Pina Colada and munching on a good burger at one of South Padre Island's beach bars. But suck it up and keep playing because it only gets better from here on.
The next four holes play along the bay offering great views and opportunities to loose several more golf balls to the bay or wetlands! The views are great but you'll also encounter a challenging 571 yard 5 that parallels the bay, a short but interesting 335 yard par 4 that will temp you to try and fly more of the bay's wetland and sand than you might be able to handle (make it and you've got a good birdie opportunity), a 163 yard par 3 with no room for error around the green, and finally another fun par 5. These are four of the most fun, challenging, scenic, and unique golf holes in Texas!
The back nine is a little more traditional, but still a blast to play and if the wind isn't howling, you may be able to head into the bar bragging. On the back nine of South Padre Golf Club you'll encounter water on 4 of nine holes, some huge bunkers, dog legs, tough approaches, and some really fun and challenging holes like #13 which is a 547 yard par 5 that dog legs left around a lake from tee box to the green which is guarded by bunkers. To learn more about this fun track, read our review of South Padre Island Golf Club.
South Padre Island Golf has a very good golf package that includes a two bedroom townhome, meal voucher, bucket of range balls, and a golf cart for 18 holes. Some of the packages offer unlimited green fees, you just pay a cart fee for each additional round. If you get the Romantic or Fisherman's package, you can always sneak in a round the next day before you head home.

Las Palmas Golf Villas
During our Stay & Play in January 2011, we stayed in a two bedroom, two bath, nicely appointed Golf Villa. The master bedroom had a king bed, TV, and a large bathroom and the other bedroom had two double beds. The living room had comfortable couches facing a huge TV with DVD, speakers, and VCR - including 5 remotes that I had no idea how to operate! The kitchen, with granite countertops, was well stocked with everything you need (coffee maker, microwave, ice maker, dishwasher, range, bender, toaster, utensils, pots and pans, etc.) to cook a gourmet meal. And the game closet had a variety of games to enjoy that evening.
The unit we stayed in, which was around 1150 square, had a garage with a washer and dryer. The living area had a door leading to a screened-in porch with patio furniture and a barbeque grill. A small back yard overlooked a wetlands area which was home to several golf balls lining one of the holes of the executive golf course. The Golf Villas are located a short 3 minute drive to the pool, pro shop, and restaurant. Some of the Golf Villas are owned by individuals and the appointments and furnishing vary depending on the owners taste and budget. You can choose a two or three bedroom (1405 square feet) Villa depending on the size of your group. The Villa we stayed in was clean, comfortable, homey, and perfect for a golf outing for 2 couples, a small family, or you and a couple golfing buddies. It seemed like everything was new or seldom used. Next time, we will try the Harbors and try to better our golf score!
Las Haciendas are very spacious 1760 square feet three bedroom, two bath, and two car garage townhomes. Decorations and appointments may vary based on the owners tastes, but most of townhomes are warm, sophisticated Mediterranean architecture and furnishings. The floor plan features a large great room which serves as a living and dining area and open kitchen with all the appliances and utensils.
The Las Haciendas have two car garages plus a golf cart garage. Some of the Las Hacienda's townhomes line the 9th hole and the living room and patio have nice views of the course - other townhomes have views of the Bay's tidal area. Each of the townhouses have a spacious under-roof outdoor living area with an attached patio and pergola. If you want to be within walking distance of the pro shop, practice area, restaurant, and pool, this is the logical choice for your stay.
Las Brisas Casitas
The Las Brisas Casitas are the most economically priced and include two bedrooms, two full baths, and a one car garage. At 950 square feet the Casitas are perfect for a weekend or longer golf getaway. All of the units have a fully equipped kitchen. Some of the Casitas line the golf holes on the back nine - you can sit on your patio and heckle the golfers or reminisce about your round as you sip a cold beer or cocktail.
When you stay at South Padre Island Golf Club you also have access to the club amenities which include a heated swimming pool and hot tub, tennis courts, fitness center, horseshoe courts, and the restaurant. The restaurant is open year round for breakfast and lunch and open for dinner on Fridays and weekends during the summer. We enjoyed a great breakfast (eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and bacon and fantastic migas) and a very tasty lunch with several options to choose from - salads, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, soups, and more. Not only was everything we sampled good, but the prices are not your typical inflated resort prices - for example, at a recent resort stay we paid $16 for two eggs over easy! The Stay and Play options are also reasonably priced - here is a link to the lodging pricing and options at South Padre Island Golf Club. The restaurant has a large screen TV and great views of the 9th hole, putting green, and lake. There is also a small bar area to enjoy a cold beer or cocktail after a fun round of golf.
