This weekend we spent the weekend on Lake Ray Hubbard. We hadn’t been to Ray Hubbard since 1982 and we were pleasantly surprised. Ray Hubbard turned out to be a fun lake. You can read the Lake Ray Hubbard review here.
We started Saturday afternoon by launching at Robertson Park and headed under the I-30 bridge for some calm water skiing on the northwest side of the bridge. Actually, we were shocked that the whole lake was so calm on a Saturday — no wind and no boat wakes which means you could have skied/boarded/tubed anywhere on the lake — you don’t find that very often on a weekend. After that we rafted up in the party cove which is also on the northwest side of I-30 for some swimmin’ and socializin’.
Robertson Park
Around sunset we went to Weekends Cafe, which is located in the Robertson Park next to BayView Marina, for appetizers on the outside patio, dinner inside, and music. You can park the boat in any of their guest boat slips or there is plenty of parking for cars in front of the cafe in the BayView Marina parking lot. You can tell that Weekends is going to be a fun place when you walk in from the parking lot — you’re greeted by a pink elephant, stork, and giraffe playing musical instruments on a floating platform in front of a large mural wall painting with Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. We had some good appetizers (the wings were excellent) on the outside patio and dinner inside was also very good (3.5 stars) and ranged from burgers to fish and ribs ($6 to $13).
Weekends
The real reason we come to Weekends is for the oldies music which they have every weekend. You can listen and view the band from most of the dinner tables, from the bar, or from some tables near the dance floor (which is always packed with old time rock and roll dancing). The band this weekend was good. We have been to Weekends before and heard the Blandells who are excellent and well known for their 50’s to 70’s music. Weekends also had a very good karaoke singer on the outside patio — this is a floating patio and at times you feel like it is also rocking to the music.
After some oldies but goodies, we walked next door to Boot Scoot & BBQ for some country music and dancing. Here we found some good music, a younger and very friendly crowd, and pool tables if you’re not into dancing. Fun place and we hear the BBQ is not bad.
The next morning we cruised by some of the very large, expensive, and magnificent homes along the southeastern shore across from Weekends. And again the water was smooth enough to ski anywhere on the lake but we headed back to the northeast side of I-30.
Rockwall, Texas
The City of Rockwall is building a large entertainment complex on the southeast side of the lake next to I-30, which will have a hotel, shops, restaurants, and more. If they add guest boat slips, this could be a fun place to spend some time once it is completed in 2007.
After skiing and swimming on Sunday morning, we packed up and headed for 18 holes of golf at Firewheel’s Lakes Course. You can read the review of Firewheel and other Texas golf courses in the golfing section of Texas Outside.
