Pedernales State Park

Location –

Pedernales Falls State Park may be reached by traveling 9 miles east of Johnson City on FM 2766, or by traveling west of Austin for 32 miles on U.S. 290, then north on FM 3232 for 6 miles. The 4,860acre park stretches along both banks of the Pedernales River for 6 miles and for an additional 3 miles along the south side of a rugged and picturesque gorge known as the Pedernales Falls.

Trails lead to the river from the parking lots at the camping area , picnic area, and swimming area; Trails have also been created from human foot traffic along the river these areas. The 71/2 mile loop known as Wolf Mountain Trail is popular among hikers, backpackers, and mountain bikers. A Primitive camping area is located 2 miles from the trailhead Overnight camping is only permitted in this designated area. The primitive camping area has 4 natural boundaries Mescal Creek, Tobacco Creek, the trail, and the rock bluffs. No camping is allowed below the bluffs. The newest trail at the Park is the 10 mile equestrian trail, the trailhead for this loop trail is at the corral west of the park road to the overlook.

Campfires are not permitted in the primitive area due to the lack of natural firewood in the area and because of the possibility of wildfires. Cooking shall be done only on containerized fuel stoves. All garbage and litter shall be packed out of the area for disposal in trash receptacles located at the designated camping area and at the trailhead. Chemical toilet facilities are located adjacent to the trail at the designated camping area. Alternative disposal of human waste should follow standard field disposal practice. Drinking water should be carried in; it is available at the parking lot.
