Ranked as the #21 “Best U.S. Municipal Golf Course” by Golfweek Magazine for 2009-2010, Aspen Golf Course is scenic, fun, and challenging 18-hole course set in the heart of the Rockies, just minutes from downtown Aspen. Every hole offers an unbelievable view of the surrounding mountains of all shapes, colors, and sizes – absolutely stunning views! Each nine is a little different from the other and both offer water hazards, dog legs, elevation changes, bunkers, and some risk reward opportunities. Prices are reasonable and the conditions are excellent with some of the best greens around. |

Breckenridge Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus designed public 27 hole beauty with a great combination of variety and vistas. The three nine hole courses are named Bear, Beaver and Elk for the wildlife that frequents this area. Each nine has some unique features but the common thread is lush fairways, near perfect greens and beautiful meadows and mountains. The combination of the Beaver and the Elk course play Colorado’s toughest rating/slope at 73.5/151 from the tips but three other tee options are provided for golfers that want to enjoy their round without such a big challenge. Breckenridge is walker friendly but the 9,300’+ elevation will be an obstacle for a Texan not accustomed to the thin air. |

Four Mile Ranch Canon City, CO Texas Outside Rating: 9.1 Review of Four Mile Golf Club
|
Four Mile Ranch Golf Club is located in the “Bananna Belt” of the Colorado mountains. At 5,500′ this course located just east of Canon City enjoys a long and comfortable golf season. Four Mile Ranch must be the ultimate Jim Engh designed course with greens that feature 2-3 bowls which is great if your approach shot ends up in the right bowl but three putt death if you’re in the wrong bowl. But probably the most unique feature of this course is that it has no sand traps. Instead it has lots of earth and rock waste areas to mess with errant shots. Four Mile Ranch is a unique golf experience and very reasonably priced by Colorado mountain standards. |

Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City is only 15 minutes from the Denver Int’l Airport and a great course to catch on your way in or out of Denver. The course is a British links style course with barely a tree in sight. The course typically has well maintained lush fairways and greens. With 5 tee box choices you can make this course play as tough or as easy as you’d like. It has some interesting and challenging holes but for the most part it’s a course that will help your confidence level before or after a beating in the mountain courses. Copper Creek Golf Club Copper Mountain , CO Texas Outside Rating: 8.7 Copper Creek Golf Club Review |
Copper Creek is truly an affordable, friendly family option for anyone wanting to experience Rocky Mountain golf without breaking their vacation budget. This 18 hole course is short in length but full of exciting (tricky?) holes and beautiful mountain scenery. Compared to other Summit County courses Copper Creek is a bargain. It’s definitely walker friendly …although a few holes will leave you gasping for oxygen if you’ve just arrived from sea level. Give it a try – a great intro to high altitude golf. Dalton Ranch Golf Club Durango, CO Texas Outside Rating: 9.5 Dalton Ranch Golf Club Review |
Ken Dye designed a fantastic American Links style layout that winds through the trees, around some lakes, and along the Animas River with scenic vistas of the towering red cliffs of the San Juan Mountains. Conditions are near perfect, the greens are fast and challenging, the bunkers are everywhere, and the holes are very memorable. A must play!

Hillcrest Golf Club Durango, CO Texas Outside Rating: 8.8 Review of Hillcrest Golf Club |
Wow, what a pleasant surprise. What looked like it would be flat, boring, and side by side from road turn out to be an excellent layout with elevation changes, water holes, scenic vistas, and some of the best and most challenging greens in Colorado. And it’s member owned and non-profit and very affordable!

The Glacier Club Durango, CO The Cliffs Nine Review: Rated 9.3The Glacier Nine Review: Rated 9.2 |
The Glacier Club is a very upscale and prestigious private golf community that is home to 27 holes of excellent golf. The Cliffs Nine is like two different courses – some homes play along glacier carved cliffs and the other holes play up and down contoured fairways lined by a variety of towering alpine trees. The Glacier Nine offers dramatic elevation changes, crystal clear lakes, and scenic vistas.

Eagle Ranch Golf Club is a very pleasant Arnold Palmer designed 18 hole par 72 public course in the sunny Eagle Valley. The course was recently named the Best Mountain Course in Colorado for under $100. The layout is primarily a links style on the front nine then moves through a canyon to some elevation changes on the back nine. Its five tee options give its players everything from a 7,530 yards (74.4/138 rating/slope) down to a friendly 5,497 yards option. Eagle Ranch benefits from warmer, drier weather and a longer season than its neighboring high cost resort courses. |

Colorado National Golf Club Erie, CO Texas Outside Rating: 8.8 Review of Colorado National |
Colorado National Golf Club is a gently rolling terrain links-style course that offers something for everyone. Located just north of Denver in Erie this is a great track for the long bombers measuring a whopping 7,676 yards from the back tees but has four more tee options for we mortals. The course is known for nice weather and great conditions. The back nine offers some fun risk-reward opportunities. Greens fees are generally reasonable, fairways are pretty wide, the greens are large and well maintained and the whole package is a value. |
Fossil Trace is a unique golf course with some exciting twists including standing rock pillars, 64 million year old fossils on rock walls and an assortment of remnants from the mining days of yesteryear. Built in 2003 this rolling terrain beauty is one you need to play when in the Denver area. Several forgiving bowl shaped greens will help your score and your ego but you’ll also be penalized by wayward shots or leaving yourself with downhill putts. Be sure to enjoy their Three Tomatoes Bar/Restaurant with it’s deck over the 10th tee and 18th green for pure Colorado enjoyment before or after a great golf experience. The Golf Club At Redlands Mesa Grand Junction, CO Texas Outside Rating: 9.4 The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa Review |
The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction, CO is simply spectacular. It’s a blend of Colorado beauty with Arizona-type lush green fairways winding through rugged red rock. Combine this with Jim Engh’s creative designing and you’ve got a golf experience that ranks sky high in fun, challenge, excitement and natural beauty. The Ranch course winds through a beautiful high mountain meadow and some old ranch buildings and farm equipment from yesteryear. The greens are generally fast yet receptive to incoming lofted shots. Check out our Review of Keystone Ranch Golf Course. |
|
The River Course at Keystone Keystone, CO Texas Outside Rating: 9.3 The River Course At Keystone Review |
The River Course at Keystone is an exciting and beautiful 18 hole course with breathtaking elevated tees and gorgeous views of the Snake River Valley and the many surrounding snow capped mountain peaks. This par 71 course is both challenging to the long hitters due to the tree lined roller coaster fairways yet fair to the shorter hitters due to the four tee box options ranging from 6,886 yards from the Blue Tees to 4,762 yards from the Red Tees. Bring your camera. The mornings tend to be especially clear and scenic and you’ll want to save the memories. Read the review of The River Course At Keystone. |
Arrowhead GC is a “must play” when you’re in the Denver area and want to see the ultimate in geological beauty…..with a great golf course winding through it. The red sandstone flatiron rock formations are incredible. You’ll feel like you ought to be able to bank your shots off the rocks to the green. If that should happen consider yourself very lucky because most holes have deep and gnarly roughs at the base of the standing rocks. The back nine and especially holes 12-14 are exciting, challenging, and absolutely breathtaking in their natural beauty. Enjoy this unique combination of geology and golf. Divide Ranch & Club Ridgeway, CO Texas Outside Rating: 8.5 Divide Ranch & Club Review |
Divide Ranch & Club plays on the top of a mesa surrounded by majestic rugged mountain ranges. Each nine was designed by a different architect giving each nine a different personality. You’ll find some elevation changes, forced carries, tight fairways, water, and some huge bunkers. A fun 18!

Snowmass Club is what makes me continue to play this very expensive and frustrating game. If offers golfers something of everything that keeps us coming back for more punishment and abuse – majestic panoramic views, near perfect conditions, fun and unique holes, lots of challenges, blind shots, elevation changes, water, large steep faced bunkers with soft fluffy sand, and much more. Snowmass is challenging (7008 yards and a 146 rating) but has 5 tee boxes which means you can bite off as much as you want to chew. |
|
Rio Grande Golf Club South Fork, Co Texas Outside Rating: 9.5 Rio Grande Golf Club Review |
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast you’ve hit the trifecta when you come to play at Rio Grande Golf Club – you can enjoy 18 holes of spectacular golf, fishing, hiking plus skiing, The course winds through sandstone outcroppings and stands of cottonwood, pine and aspen. The front nine of Rio Grande Golf Club works along both sides of the Rio Grande River. But it’s the back nine that really gets exciting with elevated tees and rolling fairways lined by rocks, trees, marshland and water. |
Telluride Golf Club Telluride, CO Texas Outside Rating: 9.3 Telluride Golf Club Review |
Wow, a must play course that has majestic views of huge beautiful homes and snow covered 14,000′ majestic mountains, big elevation changes, lots of variety, very good conditions, and some fun holes. And there are lots of bunkers, some intimidating forced carries, wind, and tough greens to contend with.

Cougar Canyon Trinidad, CO Texas Outside Rating: 9.2 Review of Cougar Canyon |
Cougar Canyon is a beautiful and definitely challenging Nicklaus Design 18 hole course. Our group of 4 traveling Texans found it to be a true test of our skills. The course is a blend of links, mountain and desert target golf. Conditions of the fairways and greens were excellent. The course has some blind holes and it’s definitely a track worth playing again. The signature hole shown in this photo isn’t quite as difficult as the photo indicates – in fact two of us birdied the hole. Cougar Canyon is a worthy course to include in a golf tour. It’s 3 hours from Amarillo and Denver. |
Pole Creek Golf Club is a 27 hole beauty located just outside Winter Park. The three nines are named Meadow, Ridge, and Ranch. Each nine has it’s own character but our group of 8 made of Texas, Illinois, and Colorado golfers found Ridge to be the toughest and Ranch the easiest when we played all three. The elevation changes are not as extreme as many Colorado mountain courses. |
