Forty-three million dollars allowed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to purchase an additional 3,073-acre property adjacent to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in Llano County, Texas. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is one of Texas’ most popular state parks and greets over 250,000 visitors annually.
The original size of the park, 1,640.5-acres established in 1978, focused around the iconic Enchanted Rock, a massive pink granite dome that rises about 425 feet above the surrounding Hill Country landscape. In 2010, the TPWD acquired additional land to expand the park by nearly 600 acres, increasing the park’s size to approximately 1,800 acres.
This expansion helped preserve the surrounding landscape and provide more recreational opportunities for visitors. Today, visitors cherish the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for its hiking trails, scenic views, and rich cultural history, including Native American heritage and early settler history.
Where Did TPWD’s $43 Million Dollars Come From?
The Centennial Parks Conservation Fund will provide financial support to speed up the development and future public use of state parks. The $1 billion fund, approved by voters in November 2023, allocates part of the state’s budget surplus to establish a steady funding source for acquiring and developing new parks.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott reported to TPWD, “Texas is home to 88 state parks that showcase our great state’s natural beauty to Texans and visitors from all over the globe, The expansion of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area will allow tourists from across the state and around the world to enjoy even more of the majesty of Texas. Together, we will continue to ensure that what makes Texas unique and beautiful is preserved for generations.”
Jeff Hildebrand, Chairman of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, also reported to TPWD, “Enchanted Rock is cherished by Texans across the state, and we are thrilled to add a property of this size and scope to this beloved park. I look forward to families experiencing this new addition to Enchanted Rock SNA and creating lasting memories for generations to come.”
When properties become available, TPWD conducts a thorough review to assess their potential for becoming a state park, natural area, or historic site. For this particular property, TPWD partnered with its nonprofit affiliate, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, to help acquire it.
Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I would like to thank the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation for their assistance and the voters of Texas for supporting the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund. These funds will play a crucial role in developing this new property. It’s thrilling to expand the recreational opportunities at this iconic Texas State Park.”
The New Addition to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
The property was previously used for private hunting, but it will now be incorporated into Enchanted Rock, offering additional recreational and conservation opportunities for Texans. It features another rock formation that could provide a new scenic viewpoint of the park’s iconic pink granite dome.
The land will also contribute to preserving the night sky and the surrounding views in an area of the state that is rapidly developing. With the sale now complete, TPWD will work on a development plan with public input to explore potential recreational uses for the land.
TPWD made the new land acquisition announcement early in January 2025. While the planning process may take several months, TPWD will keep the public informed about key updates, including a possible opening date.
