Ok, you're right – Topgolf is not a golf course but it's so much fun and has a lot of the characteristics of a golf course (targets to aim for, drives that can go nowhere, a token bunker, several ways to bet, good food and drink, the use of golf clubs and golf balls, and more) that I'm including Topgolf in our list of Texas Golf Course Reviews.
For those of you who have never played or heard of Topgolf get off the couch and round up some friends and head over any of the Topgolf locations for an enjoyable time. Topgolf is basically a:
a three story covered climate controlled driving range with dartboard like targets in the ground that you try to hit microchipped golf balls as close to the center of the target to receive points
a restaurant serving a variety of very good appetizers, entrees, and deserts
a sports bar with beer including several craft beers, mixed drinks, wine and soda
private golf bays for 1 to 10 people with excellent food and beverage service – no waiting for the cart lady
a recreation and entertainment complex with games, 225 TVs, meeting rooms, music, and lots more
Topgolf started in England and today there are 20 locations, 9 of which are in Texas, and they are opening 10 locations a year. Allen with the first Topgolf in Texas and it was recently renovated and remodeled and some of what you'll find at the Allen Topgolf incudes: 2 bars, games (pool, shuffleboard, a giant Jenga, video games), 3 stories with 92 golf bays, rooftop terrace, beer garden, restaurant, and several meeting rooms suitable for corporate events, birthdays, or reunions.
All that is great but what makes Topgolf special are the golf balls have microchips embedded in them that keep track of your score – the closer you get to the bulls-eye on any of the dartboard-like targets and the farther out you hit one of the targets (up to 220 yards out!) the more points you receive. And your score is tracked on a computer in your golf bay – making it easy (and honest) to tell who is winning and loosing and who needs to buy the next round.
In addition, there are 10 games that you can play, for example:
TopPressure – test your touch and accuracy by hitting all nine sections within the yellow target
TopScore – the closer to the center of the farthest targets, the more points you're awarded
TopChip – uses just the red target (five shots), yellow target (five shots) and green targets (10 shots) and if you hit the correct target you score points, hit the wrong one and your points disappear
Whether you compete with the games or just go for an evening of drinks, camaraderie, and to hit some golf balls, everyone from 5 to 95 and pro golfers to first timers will enjoy Topgolf. You can bring your clubs or use the free Callaway clubs – mens, kids, womens, and left or right handed.
While you're hitting the ball a very friendly wait staff will serve you drinks, appetizers, or some tasty food. Appetizers range from queso to nachos to wings (some of the best I've had) to spring rolls; some of the fresh cooked entrees include: wraps, tuna or club sandwiches, or a Vietnamese sandwich, salads and flatbreads, burgers, kids meals; and there are the desserts included injectable donut holes, ice cream sundaes, and sensational s'mores. Or come for a brunch of brunch with Eggs Benedict, French Toast, Chorizo & Egg sliders.
If you want to learn to golf or sharpen your game, there are two pros who offer individual lessons, clinics, and group lessons.
