San Angelo State Park is located on the shores of the 5,540 acre O.C. Fisher Reservoir, which was completed by the US Corps of Engineers in 1952 for flood control on the North Concho River. The park, adjacent to the City of San Angelo in Tom Green County, is an oasis of quality outdoor recreation in an area of west Texas known as Concho Country. It was leased by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in May 1995 and was opened to the public May 1, 1995.
The property contains 7677 acres, most of which will remain undeveloped. Park redevelopment to its full recreational potential is expected to take a number of years. In the meantime, a wide range of facilities are available for the enjoyment of the visitor.
In 2011, O. C. Fisher Lake was about dry with less than an acre of water left – the boat ramps were high and dry and what was left of the lake was probably less than a foot or so deep. Texas had suffered a severe drought in 2011.
You can start the day early at the park's bird blind or trails looking for some of the more than 250 species of birds in the area or you might catch a glimpse of some the other wild animals that inhabit the park. There are also designated hunting areas during the hunting season.
Then check out some of the over 50 miles worth of hiking and biking -- bring your band-aids, some of the trails are rough. If you bring your horse, you can spend the afternoon on the extensive equestrian trail system in the park. Then watch the beautiful West Texas sunset and enjoy the evening fishing for some of the lake's monster catfish.
We enjoyed a fun round of golf on Quicksand Golf Course and Riverside Hills Golf Course during our stay - you can find a local golf course and a link to our reviews of the courses we've played on this San Angelo Golf Map.
Attractions in the nearby city of San Angelo include movie theaters; shopping at major retail stores; Fort Concho, a restored historic fort; Concho Avenue, which has a historic shopping district; the Riverwalk; arena football; three public golf courses and the Cactus Hotel. There are also two other lakes in the area. Plus some good golf courses that you'll find on this San Angelo Golf Map.
