It's fun to cruise this small lake which has a tree lined shoreline with beautiful homes. There are a few places to drop an anchor and fish or swim. The lake doesn't get much boat traffic so it's easy to find some calm water for boarding or skiing. We also enjoy the food and deck at the Lake Athens Marina restaurant. The food is pretty good.
Occassionally, we will stop by Texas Fisheries Center and let the grandkids view and catch fish.
Outside of cruising, fishing, and skiing, and stopping to eat at the restaurant, there isn't anything else to do on Lake Athens.
If you don't have a boat, then you're not going to find much to do here. We don't know of any public beaches or parks and there are no nearby boat rentals that we know of.
Visit the Athens Chamber of Commerce to find some attractions, lodging, and events. The grandkids really enjoyed the Texas Fisheries Center.
There is only one restaurant on the water, Lake Athens Marina restaurant which serves good food, drinks, and has a deck overlooking the lake.
You shouldn't have any problem finding some smooth water unless it's really windy. There is very little boat traffic to cause you a problem.
According to Texas Parks & Wildlife: This lake is known for largemouth bass in the 3- to 8-pound range but has produced a lake record of 13.81 pounds. Sunfishes provide excellent opportunities for fly fishing anglers and catches up to 10 inches in length are not unusual. Crappie are few in number but are usually of good size. White bass commonly reach 16-18 inches
Emergent vegetation is abundant in the upper end of the reservoir above the 2892 bridge. Some inundated timber is still standing at mid-lake. The dam offers riprap along the face and submerged structure is available surrounding Goat Island.
Tips & Tactics: Spring is the best time of year for largemouth bass. Fish follow typical east Texas patterns. Sunfish become more active as the water warms and can be found around stands of native vegetation. Fly fishing is particularly good from a float tube or floating platform. Crappie and white bass are most active from February through May.
Lake Athens Marina has some campsites on the lake, but we don't know of any other rental property.
Lake Athens Marina has the only public ramp on the lake.
