Profile
Rated the "#1 Golf Course in San Antonio" by the San Antonio Express in 2006, 2007, and 2009, The Republic Golf Club is a very traditional 18 holes of golf that provides an enjoyable and relaxing round. This is a pretty straight forward course with good conditions and a reasonable price, particularly if you're a resident. The Republic is a player friendly course and if you pick the right set of tee boxes it's not going to beat you up and it will give you the opportunity to turn in a good round.
When you're playing The Republic it's hard to believe that you're just minutes from the Riverwalk and the 2nd largest city in Texas. The Republic Golf Club was designed by Art Schaupeter and opened for play in 2002. Schaupeter took advantage of the distinctive terrain and the course follows Salado Creek as it winds through heavily wooded areas in a broad floodplain – virtually every hole is secluded and lined by mature elm, oak, and mesquite trees – so don't miss the fairways or you'll be ricocheting off the trees.
The Republic Golf Club will also give you a little bit of everything to test your game and make for a fun round. You'll encounter some elevation changes, risk reward opportunities, water on plenty of holes, bunkers and swales and natural areas, forced carries, and uphill greens. Some examples include:
- #2 a 543 yard par 5 dog leg left with a pot bunker in the middle of the fairway where your tee shot wants to land and then a tight approach to the green with 4 good sizes bunkers
- #6 is a challenging 624 yard par 5 with a forced carry that requires a good second shot to carry a swale big enough for 3 tractor trailers
- #14 offers a risk reward shot if you want to try and carry the wet land for a shorter and safer approach shot – take the safe way off the tee box and you have a very challenging approach shot over a wetland to a green guarded by two long bunkers
- #18 is a fun finishing hole with an elevated tee box, a carry over the creek, and 7 bunkers to avoid on the way to the green
The greens are good sized, have some slope, and were running pretty quick when we played – so keep your ball below the hole. They were in very good condition and held the ball well.
The fairways at The Republic Golf Club are flat to slightly contoured and range from ample off the tee box to a little tight. The first cut was playable, but miss it and you're under the trees – the good news is you can usually find it and may be able to get back out to the fairway to save a penalty shot. The fairways were also in above average condition.
The bunkers range is shape and size and the sand was soft and deep. Some of the bunkers are high lipped and 2 to 4 feet deep. You'll encounter some natural/marsh areas, big swales, and some water holes.
Bottom line – a very golfer friendly track with good conditions, some fun holes, and a fair price. Give it a try.

Service was very good, the food is ok, the pro shop has all the basics, and the practice facilities are more than adequate.
