Review & Rating of The Legends Golf Course on Lake LBJ in Kingsland
The first time we played The Legends Golf Course on Lake LBJ was in 2006 and we weren't very impressed. Since then the course has changed hands a couple of times and when we played in 2019 we were pleasantly surprised and impressed with the conditions, which we thought were very good from the tee box to the cup. And that was after a water pump had gone out and the temperature had been over a hundred for the last three months, and there hadn't been any rain for the last 30 days – the superintendent is to be commended!
The Legends Golf Course plays around the perimeter of a very upscale community with homes along the bank of Lake LBJ. The first seven holes have a links-style look and feel – wide sweeping fairways, lots of berms, huge bunkers, and wind. The rest of the holes are more traditional with trees, some rolling terrain, and a few beautiful homes. Only a few homes are along the fairway and they shouldn't cause you any trouble and they are good eye candy!
Some of our favorite holes at The Legends Golf Club included:
- #3 is a fun 561-yard par five with a big bunker that can catch your drive, a pond that runs 210 yards out on the right side and all the way to the green – the pond on the right and a bunker on the left put a premium on the approach shot
- #7 is a par 4 and the #1 handicap thanks to its length at 430 yards, a drive that needs to miss a big left and right fairway bunker, a heavily contoured fairway from 200 yards out, and a big tree on the left front of a tiny green with a steep drop off the right side – Lake LBJ forms a beautiful backdrop for the pin
- #16 is a 433-yard par 4 with a slightly elevated tee box, a dogleg right between two bunkers, and a challenging green with a valley down the middle
- #18 is a fun 548-year par 5 that will make you want to come back and play The Legends again
The fairways were in very good condition considering the heat, no rain, and a broken pump! They range from ample to a little tight and all have a wide very playable first cut – miss that and you're probably lost. The fairways were firm providing some extra roll, some are tree-lined, and others have lots of berms.
The greens at The Legends Golf Club were also in very good condition. They held the ball well, ran true and smooth, and at a good speed of around 10 to 11. They are a variety of shapes, range in size from very small to about average, and most are guarded by at least one bunker. All of the greens have some combination of tiers, slope, and contour. No false fronts which makes for a good bump and run.
The majority of the bunkers are huge and multi-fingered. Some somewhat steep but several of the lips are smooth, so you might get lucky and roll out. The sand ranged from excellent (soft, light, fluffy, and deep) to a little thin and crunchy. All of the bunkers could use some TLC around the edges.
