Review and Rating of the Gallery South Course in Marana Arizona
The Gallery Golf Club is home to two fantastic courses, both of which were designed by John Fought and Tom Lehman – the North Course which opened in 1998 and the South which opened in 2003. The Gallery Golf Club is a private club that allows some public play with restricted hours. Each course has it's own characteristics and personality. The North Course which plays up and down the Santa Catalina Mountains has more elevation changes, wide fairways and big greens, deep bunkers, and sweeping views of the high Sonoran desert landscape.
The South 18 has wide fairway corridors that play through thousands of giant Saguaros, turtle back greens that are large but challenging, fewer and more gentle bunkers, and beautiful views in all directions. Don't let the views distract you, the South Course still requires some strategic shot making.
The Gallery Golf Club is well deserving of all the awards and accolades that it has received since opening in 1998, some of which include:
- America's 100 Greatest Courses – Best in Arizona with the North Course at #11 and South at #25
- Golfweek's Best New Courses included the South Course at number 31
Both courses are normally in near perfect conditions, offer first class service, and are home to a very well done and upscale club house with over 100 gallery quality works of art, a well stocked pro shop, lounge, and dining room with award winning cuisine.
The Gallery's South Course is home to some fantastic holes that are scenic, challenging, fun, and memorable. Rather than describe them, you should take a look at the hole by hole description on The Gallery's website. And check out the beautiful pictures of several holes.
When we played, the conditions of the fairways, greens, and bunkers were near perfect. The fairways play through the desert and giant saguaros and are some of the largest fairways that we have played – wide, sweeping, and heavily contoured. Miss them and you're likely to loose your ball or get stuck by a wide variety of cactus.
The Bent grass greens are also huge but treacherous with plenty of slope and undulation. They were also very fast, around a 11, plus most are turtle back with a slope back to the fairway or bunkers. Two and three putts were common for us – make sure you practice putting before you head out.
The bunkers range in size and shape and most are very challenging with steep faces. The sand was thick and heavy.
Bottom Line – The Gallery Golf Club's South Course is a fantastic track with a fun and challenging (but very fair) layout and you should go out of your way to get a tee time.
