Review and Rating of Shary Municipal Golf Course – holes 10 to18
Owned and operated by the City of Mission, Shary Municipal Golf Course is home to 27 holes. Each of the nines is a little different from the others, for example:
- Holes 1-9 is the shortest (2100 to 2600 yards with 4 tee boxes) of the three nines but still challenging thanks to water on 4 holes and 15 bunkers – read our review of this nine
- Holes 10-18 are a tad longer then 19-27 from the back tees but shorter from the forward tees – this nine is regarded as the most difficult
- Holes 19-27 are the original nine (opened in 1929) and the most traditional with a lot of the holes playing side by side, only 1 bunker, and push-up greens
Shary Municipal Golf Courses holes 10 to 18 is a par 36 with 4 tee boxes and yardages ranging from 2556 yards to 3194 yards. It's short but requires some shot making on some of the six dog legs which are both left and right. If you can keep the ball in the fairway, manage the dog legs, and play smart you'll have a very enjoyable and relaxing round.
Some of our favorite holes include:
- #10 is a fun 525 yard par 5 with a pond on the left in front of the tee box, followed by a small dog left to a green that is across a pond and off to the right side of the fairway – shape and positioning on this hole are keys to par
- #11 is a 180 yard par 3 with an intimidating carry over the pond to a green guarded by 3 bunkers
- #17 is a 490 yard par 5 with a sharp dog leg right around a cluster of trees and a huge bunker – short hitters will need to decide to play safe or try to fly the trees and bunker to get closer to the green
When we played in January, the Shary Municipal Golf Course greens were in very good condition, soft and held the ball well, and ran true. They were a variety of sizes and shapes and have some combination of slope and minor contour. Several have some mounding and bunkers guarding them.
The fairways were in fair shape as was the rough, which was cut thin and very playable. The fairways are tree and palm lined (one is lined by some nice homes with back yards that can come into play) and most of them are wide to ample – spray the ball and you're OB or in another fairway with a recoverable shot.
The Shary Municipal Golf Course bunkers were in very poor condition – little to no sand (firm dirt) and overgrown wtih weeds and grass along the edges. They are all in the process of being redone, which started in January 2015. The lips range from thin to 6 to 12" and you find a variety of sizes and shapes.
Slope and rating are based on playing holes 1 through 18.
Bottom line – this is a nine that is fair and playable for all levels, a little short, and includes some holes that will test your shot making.
