Profile
The Golf Club At Frisco Lakes is within the Del Web development in west Frisco and is managed by Palmer Golf. The course opened in August of 2008. A new club house has broken ground (10-09) and is under construction between the 9th and 18th holes. In the meantime, the pro shop is is still operating out of a temporary club house and some of the amenities had not yet been completed including a grill. For a new course, the greens and fairways are maturing nicely and the condition of both is very good.
The front nine meanders through the trees, gently rolling terrain, and along the shore of Lake Lewisville. The back nine traverses through the Del Web community and most of the holes are lined with moderately priced homes. You’ll find a little bit of everything on this fun track – dog legs, some risk reward opportunities, blind shots, narrow and tight approaches, water, thick white sand bunkers, and even an island green. #18 is a good example: a 556 yard par five which is uphill off the tee box, then turns right and heads downhill to a well protected tough green that has water and a huge bunker half way around it.
The five sets of tee boxes can accommodate any level of player and most of the holes are open and forgiving off the tee box. What you see is typically what you get and you won’t find a lot of trouble, until you reach the green. The approach shots put a premium on accuracy – you’ll encounter bunkers, water, and turtle top greens which are hard to hold. The greens are what can prevent you from scoring well – they are fast, in good condition, fairly large, and run true but they are well protected with plenty of slope, undulation, and some spines. Take a hard look at both the approach shot to the green and then study each putt carefully if you want to score well.
We loved the front nine – it seems to have more variety and some very fun, scenic, and challenging holes as it plays through the trees with no homes. A couple examples include: #4 is a short, 347 yard, hole that offers a good risk reward opportunity off the tee box – play it safe to the left side or try to land in the small fairway between a large sloping back bunker and the huge 100 yard long bunker staring you in the face and challenging you to “go for it.” #7 offers a good risk reward opportunity off the tee box – should you play it safe or try to carry the ravine and trees to make this 436 yard par four a little shorter – but beware, too far right and a couple trees may block your approach to the green. #9 is a fantastic hole but I don’t want to spoil it for you because words won’t do it justice.
The back fairways are lined by homes taking away some of the serenity and beauty but the last three holes will make you want to come back – two risk reward opportunities, lots of water, ups and downs, bunkers, rolling terrain, and an island green.
Bottom line, Frisco Lakes provides an excellent and very enjoyable round of golf – you’re going to love it! Note: when we played in October, it had been raining cats and dogs for weeks which had an impact on the fairways and bunkers, which you can see from the pictures. Normally, the bunkers would be in excellent condition with soft, thick, white sand.
