Profile
Just outside of Bandera, Flying L Guest Ranch Golf Course is a very fun and somewhat challenging 18 holes of golf. The course meanders through some of the 772 acres on Flying L Guest Ranch, through a scattering of homes on the back nine, and up and down the beautiful rolling hill countryside. Some of the holes offer fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding hill country.
The front nine is fantastic – scenic, lots of variety, challenging, and some very fun holes. This nine leverages the rolling terrain, huge stately oaks, and the natural vistas to make it a memorable 9 holes. Number 3 is a good example – it's a 403 yard par 4 #7 handicap with a sharp dogleg left that requires a precise drive off the elevated tee box. The drive needs to be accurate to miss the tall oaks on the left and right and a humongous oak in the middle of the fairway about where my ball wants to land – long hitters may want to keep the driver in the bag. If you have a good shot off the tee box, your next shot is uphill to a small sloping green protected by a trap on the left and water on the right. This hole sets the stage for #5 – another fun and challenging hole that requires a precise drive and a good second shot. This is one of those holes where you are tempted to go-for-it and try to carry the trees to cut off the dog – but don't miss. Great nine holes.
The back nine is a little more open, more traditional, and less challenging. This is a nine where you can score well and have a relaxing and enjoyable finish. You'll find some dog legs, 4 of the 6 water holes to contend with, and some bunkers to keep you on your toes.
When we played in May, the greens and fairways were in very good condition. A couple of the greens had some rough spots and most were about average size and speed. The fairways were fairly generous and the rough was very playable.
The Spike and Spur grill and patio at the pro shop is an excellent place for lunch or drinks after a fun round of golf – the patio is great and overlooks the 1st and 18th holes. Make your trip to play Flying L a weekend or longer adventure and enjoy the waterpark, tennis courts, horseback riding, excellent accommodations, and more at Flying L Guest Ranch.
