Review and Rating of Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi Country Club's website states that "the club tradition of excellence since 1922 is represented by the variety of amenities and features we have to offer"  In addition to an 18 hole golf course some of the amenities include:  tennis courts, fitness center, pro shop, restaurant, huge club house, lots of golf tournaments plus several special events.  Corpus Christi Country Club, which member-owned,  is in its third location since opening in 1909.  The first location was destroyed in 1919 and reopened near the ship channel in 1922.  And finally opened in its current location in 1965. 

The course plays through an upscale community in Corpus Christi with very nice homes lining one side of the majority of the fairways.  The terrain is flat and perfect for walking but lots of tall trees, including palm trees coupled with water, bunkers, water fountains, and green fairways make the course very scenic.  Corpus Christi Country Club is a very friendly members layout where you're not going to get into a lot of trouble. 

When we played in November the fairways were in near perfect condition.  Generally speaking, they are flat and firm offering lots of extra roll.  The fairways range from ample to wide open – which means bring out the big dog and let it rip.  But if you miss the fairway, you're in a fairly dense and thick rough or under lots of trees which a playable, but tough shot back to the fairway.  Water, bunkers, and out of bounds into backyards of some very nice homes on one side of the fairway will most likely cause some extra strokes during your round.  Some of the ponds are hidden and most are set well off of the fairway, but if you spray the ball they can come into play.

The Corpus Christi Country Club greens on the front nine are very small and odd shaped – several look like a light bulb!  As such they are difficult to hit and all are guarded by at least one bunker.  The back nine greens seem much larger but they have more slope, contour, and tiers.  On both nines, some of the greens are raised and others flat and well suited for a bump and run shot.  All of the greens were in excellent condition, held the ball well, rolled true and rolled at a very good speed.  

The bunkers were a little wet when we played thanks to some recent rain but they were in great shape with what would normally by soft and fluffy sand.  Don't expect to roll out – the faces are pretty steep and deep.
