Review of Cedar Creek Golf Club
Cedar Creek Golf Course is one of the six Alamo City Golf Trail courses owned by the City of San Antonio. The course plays through the trees, across meandering creeks, and up and down the rolling hills of northwest San Antonio providing great views, blind shots, dog legs, rock outcroppings, elevation changes, waterfalls, steep and deep sand and grass bunkers, and lots more. Cedar Creek will throw a little bit of everything at you and requires every shot you've got if you want to score well. You'll need accuracy off the tee box to avoid the trees and land in the narrow fairways, skill at uneven fairway shots, good sand and grass bunker skills, and precise approach shots. We really enjoyed the scenery, challenges, ups and downs, and elevation changes at Cedar Creek.
The fairways are tree and berm lined and most of them are narrow, rolling, and contoured. The fairway condition is average and the trees and shade make it tough to grow and maintain grass, meaning if you miss the fairway you'll play off the dirt or patchy grass. The greens were in about average condition, a little fast, bumpy, and challenging to read due to both slope and undulation. Most of the greens are small, elevated, and pretty well protected. The sand and grass bunkers are in good condition and present challenges as a number of them are deep and steep faced. The more challenging the course, the higher we rate it and Cedar Creek can be challenging – as such, the average golfer may find this course a little frustrating. Move up a set of tee boxes and it may play a little easier.
Cedar Creek offers a lot of variety and there are a number of very fun, scenic, and challenging holes. For example, #6 is a sharp dog leg right that requires a precise drive to avoid the bunker and provide a level shot on this rolling and sloping fairway; #10 offers a beautiful view from an elevated tee box way above the narrow dog leg right fairway; and the 535 yard #5 is a dog leg right then a "Z" to the contoured and narrow green tucked back in the trees and well protected by grass, sand bunkers, and mounding.
Bottom line – Cedar Creek offers you a lot of variety, beautiful vistas, dramatic elevation changes, and an opportunity to play all your shots – all at an affordable price.
