Northwest of Houston off 290 is Blackhorse Golf Club which offers 36 holes of some very fun and challenging golf. We played the South Course which is like playing three different courses. The first few holes are open, the next few are a narrow corridor of elm, ash and oak trees, and the final holes are around an expansive sand quarry that has been transformed into a colorful array of wetlands. We found the 15th, 16th, and 17th holes to be some of the most fun and challenging that we have played in Texas. They make Blackhorse very memorable and a "want to play again" course.
The front nine is pretty flat, most the holes are straight, and there isn't anything really unique – we rated it a 7.5. The back nine is really fun, challenging, unique, and worth playing again, and again, and again – rated 9.5.
The South Course was in excellent condition when we played – the fairways were near perfect as were the greens. The TifEagle greens were lightening fast, gently breaking, and challenging based on pin placement.
Blackhorse is somewhat pricey but a unique, fun, and memorable experience – making it worth the price.
