Galveston is a fantastic place to spend a fun filled summer weekend, a beach vacation, or just a few hours on the beaches. Galveston offers 32 miles of relaxing beaches, superb restaurants, top resort hotels, marvelous downtown shopping, numerous antique stores, incredible art galleries, fabulous entertainment and one of the largest and well-preserved concentrations of Victorian architecture in the country. Galveston Island is filled with fun things to see and do including water parks, a tall sailing ship, flight museum, a great golf course, camping, fishing, offshore gambling, and lots more.
Settled in 1816, Galveston now has a population of 60,000 friendly folks spread out over a small island separated from the mainland by Galveston Bay. The island is 32 miles long and two and a half miles wide. At one point in Texas history, Galveston was the largest city in Texas.
The Port of Galveston was established in 1825 and served as the main port for the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution and later served as the capital of the Republic of Texas. In the 19th century, the Port was one of the largest in the United States. Galveston is also known for it's hurricanes and specifically the hurricane that devastated the city in 1900 - a natural disaster that still counts as the deadliest in American history.
