Profile
Island RV is about a half mile from the Port Aransas Ferry, a few blocks from the center of downtown Port Aransas, and about a mile from the beach. So if you are planning on visiting Port Aransas for some fishing, beach time, or just exploring the area, Island RV Resort is a perfect location.
The Park was built in 1927 and is a typical RV Park with side by side RV pads, sparse grassy areas, a few palm trees, and the important amenities. The staff is very friendly and will go out of their way to help. To find the park and other things to see and do, check out the Port Aransas Map and the Top Ten Things to do in Port Aransas.

Like most other travelers, we stay at Island RV Resort to enjoy some beach time, explore the area, and take advantage of the variety of good restaurants and fun nightlife in Port A. We enjoy biking everywhere when we visit Port Aransas. For example, on the most recent trip we started by riding around Robert Park to check out the marina and shipping channel, take the grandson on the ferry, and watch the dolphins body surf the waves of incoming ships. Then on the way to the beach we stopped at Trout Street Bar & Grill for lunch on their bay-side deck. From there it is less than a mile to the beach which has sand that is compact enough to ride bikes for up to 17 miles. The beach was clean, the water was warm, and it was fun watching the kite surfers who had driven all the way from California in late December because they heard the weather was warm and the wind was blowing but unfortunately, they were wrong on both counts, it was chilly with light winds but they were still having fun. From the beach it was another easy ride to Hooks Bar & Grill for appetizers, music, and drinks on their outside patio. Fun Day! We would have ridden the bikes to dinner and some of the fun bars that evening but it was drizzling.
We spent the next day exploring and biking around Rockport and Fulton. One day was spent playing tourist in Corpus.
We enjoy visiting Port A because it has a number of fun things to do which are all with a 5 mile radius of Island RV Resort. Here is our list of things to see and do in Port Aransas and nearby:
- Bike - as mentioned earlier, its fun to go in everywhere in Port A by bike - the town is somewhat bike friendly (sidewalks and limited bike paths) and the terrain is flat. You can bike to the beach, bars, restaurants, jetties for fishing, or just peddle around town for some exercise
- Fish - if you like to fish, Port A is the place to be and you'll find everything from jetty to bay to flats to deep sea charter fishing
- Get Some Beach Time - at the south east side of town you'll run right into the beach with 18 miles of uninterrupted public shoreline. You can ride your bikes or drive you car or even camp on the beach. Stake out a section of the beach and enjoy the water, people watch, fish from the beach or the Horace Caldwell Pier, surf, boggie board, fly a kite, play ball, cook a hot dog, or just relax in your beach chair and enjoy the sunset.
- Explore Rockport/Fulton - head across the ferry and visit Rockport Fulton area for shopping, lunch on the water, golf, bike riding, museums, and more
- Visit Corpus Christi - Corpus is only 35 minutes away and has lots to see and do including museums, dog racing, and more. If you don't feel like driving to Corpus, hop on the bus and you can get to Corpus for $1.25! Click here to read more about what there is to see and do in Corpus Christi.
- Watch the Birds - check out the birds at Wetlands Park, Leona Belle Turnbull Birding Center, Paradise Pond, or the South Jetty. Or take a whooping crane and birding boat tour
- Go Gambling - just across the shipping channel is the Texas Treasure Casino Tours boat which has dinner and gambling cruises
- Kayak/Canoe - there are some excellent kayak trails in the area
- Boat Excursions - take a boat tour of the bay or the jetty boat to the St Joe's Island (private and no access by car) for beach-combing, fishing, shelling, surfing, or picnicking
- Go Golfing - you don't have a lot of choices here but we understand that Rockport has a couple good courses and better yet, Arnold Palmer is building a new championship course on the island about five miles from downtown Port A. Here is a map of nearby golf courses.
- Visit the Community Center - a block from Island RV Resort is the Port Aransas Community Center which is open to the public and has a pool, hiking and biking trails, playground, and exercise room
- Ride The Trolley - the Port Aransas Trolley runs in front of the Park and is easy and inexpensive way to explore the area
Restaurants and Night Life - you have plenty of choices here all with a mile or two of Island RV Resort and it's a pretty easy walk or bike to the majority of the restaurants. Some of the better known and recommended restaurants include: Trout Street Bar & Grill (361 749-7800, wide variety of entrees and on the water), Seafood & Spaghetti Works (361 749-5666 for seafood, steaks, and Italian food), Hook's Bar & Grill (361 749-3663, indoor and outdoor dining and live music plus excellent sushi grade tuna!), and Virginia's on the Bay (361 749-4088, dine on the harbor and enjoy the sunsets). We love the Port A nightlife, it is a mixture of fun locals and tourists out to have a good time, good entertainment, and funky clubs. Some of our favorites include: The Back Porch (open air waterfront hangout), Salty Dog (coolest honky-tonk on the Texas Riviera!), and Bernie's Beach House (live music, pool table, big screens, DJs, and a dance floor), or Sharkey's on the outskirts of town for a good bar upstairs and dance hall for the younger crowd downstairs.
