Review and Rating of Alsatian Resort & Golf Club – Castroville, Texas
Wow, Wow, Wow! We've been camping since 1976 and never experienced anything like Alasatian Resort & Golf Club. Imagine experiencing all of this on your next camping/RVing experience:
- an excellent restaurant with full service bar that is well respected for its outstanding Pina Coladas and Margaritas
- RV pull-in sites with Casitas that have an upscale tiled shower, workstation, outdoor kitchen, and two patios overlooking the golf course
- a full service spa with everything from pedicures to manicures to massages
- a fitness center
- an 18 hole championship golf course only 2 minutes away
- a stocked fishing pond
- a beautiful pool area with a hot tub, infinity pool with a waterfall, and a pavilion with upscale outdoor furniture
- and it's only 20 minutes from San Antonio which is the top tourist attraction in Texas
Alastian Resort is "the ultimate experience in luxurious RV destinations" and according to William Bedinghaus (President, CEO) "Our Mission while designing the resort was to create a recreational destination experience for RV owners that would truly be the equivalent of that offered in five star hotel resorts. The Alsatian Resort & Golf Club’s master plan consists of 156 recreational acres that even in Phase I amounts to a $10,000,000 outdoor entertainment complex, built for the sophisticated RV owner, that rivals the best of Texas five star hotel resorts, and I personally believe in the RV class, it’s the best in Texas."
Alsatian Resort & Golf Club opened in June 2014 and is well deserving of it's 10/10/10 rating by Good Sam – it also made our list of the Best RV Parks in Texas!
The roads are all paved and wide enough for big rigs (in fact over $1 million was spent on the roads alone) and the sites are level and long with landscaping and grass on each side of the parking pad. Everything is well thought out, done right, and meticulously maintained. For example, when guests leave their site the chairs and table at the site are moved to covered storage, then cleaned and returned to the site just before a guest checks in.
The Resort must have spent a fortune on landscaping – the Resort is full of colorful plants, crepe myrtles, trees, and more and there is more landscaping to come. When it all matures, this will be a beautiful and colorful place to stay. Plus it's quiet and peaceful – except you might hear a golfer laugh or swear when his golf ball lands in the water, ricochets off a tree, or he misses a putt. From your Casita it's ok to yell "nice putt" when you see one go in the cup!
The Alsatian staff is very customer focused, friendly, and extremely enthusiastic about their Resort and they go out of their way to make sure that you have an enjoyable stay.
The Resort sits on 16 acres and management has plans to develop another 17 adjoining acres. Some of the plans include more sites, upscale custom built cottages, hiking and biking trails, a dog park, pickle ball courts, and lots more. They currently have several events planned (imagine listening to live music sitting in the pool or hot tub or in a comfy chair – the stage faces the pool and the golf course is a backdrop) throughout the year and they plan on scheduling lots of fun things for kids to do.

We spent a couple days at Alsatian Resort and had a great time. Shortly after a very warm greeting and getting the motorhome settled into it's Casita site, we walked to the Hideaway Restaurant which overlooks the pool. We were told we had to try the Burgers and Pizza so we did - but I hated to pass on the soups, salads, and a variety of sandwiches from BLTs to Meatball Subs to Catfish/Shrimp Po'Boy to a classic Rueben. But the burger was to die for - I had the Californian which was a juicy perfectly cooked 1/3 pound of sirloin and brisket mixed together (delicious) on a Brioche bun with cheese, pineapple, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado plus a delicious combination of sweet potato fries and regular fries - another Wow!
In addition to Hideaway's Chief DJ making his own bread, pesto sauce, pastas and sauces, he also makes his own artisan pizza dough and then adds some creative toppings - and our pizza was delicious. The burger and pizza were more than enough, but the staff insisted (and we didn't argue very hard) that we try a Creme Brulee - to die for!
After an hour long lunch we waddled to our car and headed to Briggs Ranch for 18 holes of golf and to walk off some of that delicious lunch. What an outstanding Tom Fazio designed course that was carved out of a beautiful piece of property with lots of trees and gently rolling hills and a few multi-million dollar homes overlooking the fairway. Excellent conditions, lots of dog legs, and 72 bunkers (small deep ovals to long nasty multi-fingered monsters) were everywhere. I spent a lot of time in most of the bunkers and the jeep now has enough sand to form a sand box for the grandkids! Read our review of this outstanding private golf course.
After golf it was hard to beat a long soak in the hot tub to work out some of the kinks. Since the restaurant at Alsatian Resort is closed on Sunday and Mondays we headed into Castroville for a pretty good chicken fried chicken at Sammy's Restaurant which has been serving food since 1948.
The next morning we headed into San Antonio for a tour of the city with Alamo Helicopter. We been exploring San Antonio for years but from the air we got a whole different perspective and learned a lot from our pilot. A fun ride. Read about our Helicopter Tour of San Antonio.
The next morning we teed off at Alsatian Golf Course. which is a long par 5 from the Resort. What a pleasant surprise - some outstanding holes, somewhat demanding but very fair, near perfect greens, friendly service, a 3 hour pace of play, and very reasonable rates for such a quality course. On the 14th hole I overshot the green and almost landed on the patio of our Casita! Here is a link to the review and rating of Alsatian Golf Course. Guests of the Resort can get a discount on green fees.
In addition to all the great amenities at Alsatian Resort, one of the advantages of staying here is that you're only 20 minutes from San Antonio and all that it has to offer from missions to thrilling amusement park rides to excellent golf courses, restaurants, and shopping. Some of our favorite things to see and do in San Antonio include:
- SeaWorld and Aquatica have something for everyone - click on the links to read about our visits to both of these fun attractions
- if you've never been to San Antonio, then you need to visit the Alamo, ride one of the boats on the Riverwalk, and go to the top of the Hemisphere
- our favorite way to explore San Antonio is riding our bikes around the city - San Antonio also has a bike share program if you didn't bring your bikes
- if you like golf and have played Alsatian Golf Club, San Antonio has some of the best courses in the State - here is our list of the best San Antonio Golf Courses and a San Antonio Golf map to find other near by courses
