Troy Burne is a beautiful Midwestern course in the rolling hills of Western Wisconsin. This Tom Lehman 18 hole par 71 venue is exceptional in many ways but the most striking feature has to be its 125 sand bunkers. These are big, well built and well maintained. Almost half are greenside bunkers. The vertical, tall, wood wall bunker on the 144 yd par 3 15th hole has the look of the toughest bunkers you'll find in the British Open venues. See photo.
Troy Burne has the feel of a Irish or Scottish stadium links course on several holes but also has holes carved through majestic pines and hardwoods. The homes near the golf course are worthy of envy and set back enough so they're not really in danger of errant golf balls. The course covers 225 acres of gentle rolling hills so it provides a calming relief from playing crowded city courses.
Although the address is Hudson the course is actually in the small town of Troy. And the Scottish term for creek is Burne. Hence the name.
The front nine sets the stage for some exciting holes on the back nine especially a string of risk/reward holes from 10 through 17.
I played Troy Burne for a full 36 holes with my two brothers and an old friend on a perfect Monday, June 7, 2010. I made a considerable improvement to my score on my second 18. I'm sure I'll do even better when I get back and play it again. And I definitely plan to do that!
Dave Tentis and his staff do a great job of running this fine golf course and pro shop. The Players Assistants were friendly and helpful. The bar/restaurant was good, clean and spacious and included a nice outdoor seating area.
