When you're traveling the Midwest up north of the Twin Cities you'll have your choice of many lush and heavily wooded rural courses. A real hidden gem is the Siren National course in Wisconsin just off Highway 70 about 20 miles from the St. Croix River and the Minnesota border and 2 hours north of Minneapolis/St.Paul.
Since opening in 2000 Siren National has survived a major tornado, a drought and financial struggles. But now under local Siren businessmen's ownership headed by Mark Kamish the course is in great shape and planning to build a new clubhouse with much improved visability and redesign some holes strategic to the new clubhouse.
The course is walkable for the hearty. Siren National is loaded with assorted hardwoods and softwoods that provide beautiful Fall colors in late-Sept/October. You'll experience continued elevation changes from your first tee shot to your final climb back to the doughnut shaped practice green beneath the currently modest clubhouse.
Some notable holes include the #3 par 3 over with the green hanging above the wall of boulders shown in this photo. The hole plays 187 from the blue tees. Long left is safe. Short is death.
The front nine plays to a par 37 with three fun par 5s. The back nine is a par 35 starting with some exciting doglegs and scary greens on holes 10 and 11.
If you like to avoid sandtraps you'll like the fact that Siren National currently only has four of these…but all definitely come in to play.
Another plus for Siren National in my opinion is that it is value priced and has that Wisconsin small town charm.
When in the Upper Midwest Northwoods be sure to experience Siren National.
