Profile
Woodforest Golf Club, formally known as Fish Creek Golf Club is a must play if you’re in the area. The first 18 holes at Woodforest Golf Club opened in 2001 to rave reviews including: Ranked #3 “Best New Course in Houston” and “Top 10 Best Public Par 5’s” by the Houston Chronicle Golf Guide and a “Must Play” by Golf Magazine. Another 9 holes, the West course, was added two years later and Woodforest continues to receive rave reviews for it’s excellent course conditions, well maintained facilities, and the fastest and most consistent near perfect greens. Strategically placed bunkers and water make club selection critical for a good round, but skillful putting is the real key to scoring well on this course. Woodforest Golf Club has the look and feel of an expensive private club and it’s a joy to play.
The Front nine has a reputation as the most traditional and easiest with wide, forgiving fairways. The Back nine and West are tree lined and more scenic with the Back being the most challenging and the West nine is known for it’s tough greens. We played the Front nine and the West nine at the same time that the pros were playing to try and qualify for the PGA tour. Hosting the PGA Q School is a testament to the quality and challenging nature of Woodforest.
The Front nine is pretty straight forward and this is a nine where you can score well if you can miss the bunkers and water on 3 holes and putt well. You’ll find a couple fun holes like #4 where the wide fairway narrows to two cart paths wide from 140 yards out to the green. #7 will test your skills as it takes a sharp dog leg left along a pond presenting some risk reward opportunities to try and stuff it and hold on a small green that has water most of the way around it.
We really enjoyed the West nine – much more scenic, lots more variety, and a fun but challenging layout. Accuracy, proper club selection, and putting are keys to success here. You’ll find water on a couple holes, much tighter and more contoured fairways, lots of trees, and well protected tough lightening fast greens with slope, undulation, and subtle breaks. West #2, a 518 yard par 5, is a good example with water and trees and a narrow landing zone presenting a challenge off the tee box, trees along one side and water along the left side make the second shot tough, and a small well protected green makes the approach very challenging, and then you have to putt!
Woodforest is clearly one of the best maintained courses public courses we have played and the greens are unbelievable. You’ll enjoy this course and it’s worth going out of your way to play it.

Woodforest Golf Club has a very good practice facility including fairway and green side bunkers. The facilities, pro shop, and grill are well done and the veranda with rocking chairs overlooking the 18th green is a excellent place for a drink after a fun
