eview of Pecan Valley Golf Club
As of January 2012, Pecan Valley Golf Club is no longer open for golf. Ownership has decided to cease operations during the off-season months to investigate all viable options for the Pecan Valley Golf Course. In June 2012, it was announced that Foresight Golf planned to use the site to create Valor Club, a nine hole golf course with housing and amenities for disabled military veterans.
Pecan Valley is nestled along the Salado Creek and is the Home of the 1968 PGA Golf Championship and the 2001 US Amateur Public Links Championship. With 200 lush acres, Pecan Valley is a great course with lots of history which is documented in the club house and on the course. When you golf at Pecan Valley, you'll be playing holes that were played by some of the golf legends including The Golden Bear, Arnie, and Chi Chi. With the help of renowned architect Bob Cupp in 1998, Pecan Valley Golf Club was restored to its legendary status with more than $5.5 million in improvements. Pecan Valley has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of top 25 courses in Texas and in 2007 was ranked as one of the "Best Public Courses in Texas" by Avid Golfer.
The terrain is flat to gently rolling hills with lots of trees on both sides of fairway. A creek meanders throughout the course and seems to be strategically placed on a number of holes – keep an eye out for it and play accordingly or you'll add a few strokes to you score. The fairways were in above average condition and in most cases they were wide and forgiving. However, you will encounter a lot of dog legs that require you to think about your next shot and demand accuracy instead of distance.
The greens seemed a little larger than normal, in very good condition, and are gently rolling – on some shots, if they don't hold, you may get to watch your ball roll off the green and back down into the fairway. Most of the bunkers are steep faced with soft thick sand and quite a few of them are protecting the green. In fact, it would be a good idea to practice your bunker shots before you start your round.
This is a somewhat challenging but very fair and fun course to play. If you play smart you can score well and really enjoy your round.
